The definitions listed below are used to monitor emergency department visits in NC DETECT. These definitions reflect both syndromes and custom events. Syndromes typically are used for ongoing surveillance and/or require complicated search queries. Custom events are typically used for definitions that are not used frequently and/or have definitions that may be in flux.

Abbreviations, misspellings and negation are taken into account when searching for keywords in the free text data (chief complaints and triage notes).
